Modern LED Lighting for Every Space

Lighting is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a home or commercial space. Modern LED technology delivers better light quality, dramatically lower energy costs, and design flexibility that wasn't possible with older halogen or fluorescent systems.

Randwick Electrical designs and installs LED lighting solutions across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs — from simple halogen-to-LED swaps through to complete lighting redesigns for renovations, new builds, and commercial fit-outs.

Our LED Lighting Services

  • LED downlight installation — the most popular residential upgrade. We install recessed LED downlights with proper thermal insulation covers and fire-rated housings. Choose from warm white (3000K) for living areas, cool white (4000K) for kitchens and bathrooms, or tuneable options
  • Halogen to LED conversion — replace existing halogen downlights with energy-efficient LED equivalents. Most conversions use the existing cutout size, so there's minimal disruption to your ceiling
  • Dimmer switch installation — LED-compatible dimmers let you control brightness and mood. We install single-zone dimmers, multi-zone smart dimmers, and integrate with home automation systems
  • Under-cabinet and strip lighting — LED strip lighting for kitchens, shelving, staircases, and feature walls. Available in a range of colour temperatures and RGB options
  • Outdoor and landscape lighting — garden path lights, wall washers, deck lighting, and security floods. All rated for outdoor use and installed with waterproof connections
  • Commercial lighting design — office, retail, and hospitality lighting that meets Australian standards for lux levels, glare rating, and energy efficiency. We work with architects and designers on specification projects
  • Pendant and feature lighting — installation of decorative pendants, chandeliers, wall sconces, and track lighting. We handle the electrical work including junction boxes, mounting hardware, and switching

Why Switch to LED?

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 80% less energy than halogen downlights — a 50W halogen is replaced by a 7–10W LED producing the same (or better) light output
  • 25,000–50,000 hour lifespan — compared to 2,000 hours for halogens. That's 15–25 years of normal use without replacing a globe
  • Less heat output — halogen downlights run at 200°C+ and are a fire risk in insulated ceilings. LEDs run cool, improving safety and reducing air conditioning load
  • Better light quality — modern LEDs offer high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) ratings of 90+, meaning colours look natural and accurate
  • Instant on — no warm-up time, full brightness immediately. Unlike compact fluorescents (CFLs) which can take 30+ seconds to reach full output

Lighting Design for Renovations & New Builds

If you're renovating or building, lighting design should be part of the planning stage — not an afterthought. We work with homeowners, architects, and builders to create lighting layouts that consider task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting, and natural light integration.

We provide lighting plans showing fixture placement, switching zones, dimmer locations, and wiring routes — all before we cut a single hole in the ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many LED downlights do I need per room?
As a general guide, one downlight per 1.5–2 square metres provides good general illumination. A typical 4x5m living room needs 8–12 downlights. We'll create a layout that avoids dark spots and provides even coverage.
Can I replace halogen downlights with LED myself?
Replacing the globe is fine if it's a simple plug-in retrofit. However, if the fitting needs replacing (which is recommended for fire safety), or if new wiring, transformers, or dimmers are needed, you'll need a licensed electrician. In NSW, all electrical installation work must be done by a licensed person.
What colour temperature should I choose?
Warm white (2700–3000K) for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. Cool white (4000K) for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Daylight (5000K+) for garages and workshops. We can install tuneable white LEDs that adjust temperature throughout the day.
How much does LED downlight installation cost?
Supply and install typically runs $75–$120 per downlight for standard IC-4 rated LED downlights. Costs vary based on accessibility, ceiling type, and whether new cabling is needed. We provide a fixed quote before starting.
Will LED downlights work with my existing dimmer?
Probably not. Most older dimmers are designed for halogen/incandescent loads and will cause LED flickering. We install LED-compatible dimmers (trailing edge) that provide smooth, flicker-free dimming from 100% down to 5%.

LED lighting in Eastern Suburbs homes

A well-designed LED scheme is the cheapest interior renovation a home can have. The right colour temperature, the right beam angles, the right control gear — and a Federation home in Coogee or a Bondi apartment can feel transformed without a brick being moved. Here's how we approach it.

Colour temperature — the most-ignored decision

2700K is warm, candle-like — best for bedrooms and living rooms. 3000K is the most common "warm white" — fine everywhere. 4000K is neutral / cool white — good for kitchens, bathrooms, garages, study spaces. 5000K+ is daylight — usually too clinical for residential. Get this wrong and a $4,000 lighting installation feels like a hospital corridor. We'll show you samples in your space before you commit.

Downlight density

The mid-2010s habit of installing one downlight per square metre is over. Modern LED downlights are far more efficient and use wider beam angles — most rooms now need fewer fittings, not more. Over-lit ceilings flatten architecture and waste money. We do a quick lighting plan before any installation: a typical 4×4m bedroom needs 4 downlights, not 9.

Dimming + smart control

Most LED downlights are dimmable now, but you need the right driver and the right dimmer switch — incompatible pairings cause buzzing, flicker, and shortened LED life. We use Clipsal, HPM, or Schneider dimmers paired to the driver brand. For smart control, Philips Hue and Lifx are easy retrofits. Control4, Lutron and full hardwired smart-home systems are a separate scope — happy to advise.

Heritage and apartment considerations

Old Paddington and Surry Hills terraces with lath-and-plaster ceilings need careful cutting and clip-in (not screw-in) fittings. Bondi apartment ceilings are often acoustic-insulated — the type of LED matters for IC-rating and ventilation. We work in both regularly.

Outdoor and landscape lighting

Pathway lighting, garden uplighters, deck lighting, façade washes — all 12V or low-voltage LED, IP-rated for outdoor use, with photocell + timer control. Designs that don't look like a footy field on Friday night.
